HSC advocated for cleaner electricity sources to advance achievement of carbon reduction goals
HEMLOCK, Mich. — Hemlock Semiconductor Operations (HSC) today praised the approval of Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). The Clean Energy Plan provides a 20-year blueprint to meet statewide energy needs and, notably, commits Michigan’s largest energy provider to being coal-free by 2025.
HSC was integral in advocating for the clean energy transformation of Michigan’s grid, working closely with Consumers Energy and multiple stakeholders to reach a settlement agreement around the Clean Energy Plan. The agreement reshaped the Plan to include the retirement of five coal units along with the increased deployment of solar power and battery storage capacity on the grid. Ultimately, the Clean Energy Plan ensures that 90 percent of capacity comes from clean sources by 2040.
“Today is historic for our clean energy future, and we are proud to have helped shift Michigan’s grid to be greener and more sustainable,” said HSC Sustainability Leader Steven Holty. “The majority of HSC’s carbon footprint results from electricity use, and the Clean Energy Plan will advance our progress toward our decarbonization goals.”
HSC works continuously to make its business operations more sustainable and to reduce embodied carbon across the solar supply chain. At full production, HSC is the largest single-site user of electricity in the state of Michigan and the largest customer of Consumers Energy. A majority of HSC’s greenhouse gas emissions are Scope 2, associated with its purchased electricity. HSC pursues multiple avenues to reduce its carbon footprint from electricity use, and key among them is working closely with Consumers Energy. HSC has successfully collaborated with Consumers Energy to develop a peak power management program and, now, a cleaner electric grid.
