The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Great Lakes Bay Region are introducing cutting-edge technology labs and esports programs aimed at preparing teens and preteens for future careers in the digital world while developing critical life skills such as digital literacy.
“We’re trying to do more for our older members, more to prepare them to inherit the great future that’s coming to this region,” said Brandon Kathman, local director of resource development for the Boys and Girls Clubs.
Kathman emphasized that the programs are not solely focused on career preparation.
“These labs are also going to be incredible for career launch and career development. Digital literacy is going to be essential to inherit the jobs of the future,” he said.
The organization is rolling out the tech labs in Bay City, Pinconning, and Saginaw.
Samantha Oliver, director of programs, highlighted the benefits of esports beyond gaming.
“Esports not only taps into the love of video games, but teaches youth the softer skills they need to succeed in life. The skills in dealing with people, how to work together as a team, how to collaborate, how to brainstorm things,” she said.
The labs are being developed with the support of partners including Hemlock Semiconductor, AT&T, and SC Johnson, who are providing the technology necessary for learning in digital literacy, career readiness, coding, and esports.
